PH vice chairman of WTO

The Philippines will assume vice chairmanship of the World Trade Organization, after a successful pitch of the Trade Department to co-lead the global group of nations.

Trade Secretary Gregory Domingo told reporters at the sidelines of the Procter & Gamble SME Leadership College 2015 the Philippines petitioned the WTO to consider the country as one of the three vice chairmen to advance its cause for micro, small and medium enterprises.

“We need to be heard. WTO is a big group of over 160 countries. This is the only way to push our agenda for MSMEs,” he said.

Domingo said it was the Philippines that put a global perspective to MSMEs. He said with the vice-chairmanship, the Philippines expected MSMEs to achieve global recognition and necessary support to become competent and world-class.

Micro, small and medium enterprises account for about 99 percent of the total businesses in the Philippines. Domingo is bound to fly to Geneva before end-September to attend a high level WTO meeting.
