Baby bathing questions – answered

It’s not easy bathing a baby, especially for first time parents. While bathing your newborn seems harmless, doing it in a way that will keep such a small, delicate being safe is the difficult part. Good news for you, it doesn’t have to be as hard as it seems, as long as you know the basics.

Here are the most frequently asked questions of parents about bathing babies.

Newborn babies do not need to be given a bath everyday. Bathing your infant several times a week will dry out his or her naturally soft skin. If your little one gets frequently dirty, which is a natural thing, be quick with diaper changes and use burp cloths. Make sure to keep your baby’s face, neck, and bottom (diaper area) clean. You can bathe him or her regularly when he or she is past the first month.

When should I bathe my baby?

It is best to give baby a bath when you are not in a rush, so you both can enjoy this little bonding activity. Some parents choose to bathe their babies in the morning, when baby is awake and willing to enjoy the experience. Others opt for baths before bedtime as a calming ritual. Whatever you choose to do, just make sure that you wait a while after feeding time before you set baby down in a bath.

Where and how do I start?

Start with the less dirty areas – behind his ears first, then on to the neck, arms, legs, diaper area, and finally, the hair.

Babies lose body heat and get cold very quickly, thus make sure you use lukewarm water and that the room temperature is at a comfortable 24 to 26°C. To keep it quick, make sure you have all bath essentials, including a dermatologist-tested and hypoallergenic shampoo and bath soap, ready and within reach before you even start! Dry your baby off quickly with a soft and unscented towel, and never leave your baby alone in the water.
