TROPICAL storm “Hagupit” is forecast to intensify into a typhoon before entering the country on Thursday afternoon, the weather bureau said Tuesday.

“Hagupit” was spotted 2,325 kilometers east of Mindanao and packing maximum winds of 75 kilometers per hour near the center and gusts of 90 kph on Tuesday. It was forecast to move west-northwest at 35 kph.

The storm will be named “Ruby” once it enters the Philippine Area of Responsibility, senior forecaster Rene Paciente said.

He said the storm may make landfall in Eastern Visayas, but it was expected to head for Japan not long after.
