Hagdang Bato headlines 7th Mayor Bagatsing racefest

VETERAN runner Hagdang Bato leads a star-studded cast in the Resorts World-Challenge of Champions Cup in the 7th Mayor Ramon D. Bagatsing Memorial Racing Festival on Aug. 30 at San Lazaro Leisure Park.

The multi-stakes winning champion will see action over 1,750 meters against Dixie Gold, Hot and Spicy, Low Profile, Messi, Oh Oh Seven, and Penrith. The race is open to 4YO and older local and imported horses.

Last Sunday, Messi won a Philippine Racing Commission-sponsored stakes race (see separate story below) and could be Hagdang Bato’s most formidable foe in this race.

Also set for this Sunday are the Philracom-Mayor Ramon D. Bagatsing Cup Division I, for 3YO local (open), featuring Breaking Bad, Dikoridik Koridak, Gentle Strength, Icon, Princess Ella, Princess Meili, Spicy Time, and Thunder Maxx.

The declared runners in the Philracom-Mayor Ramon Bagatsing Cup Division II for 3YO local horses are Guimaras Island, Hola Alonso, Just Imagine, Lakan, Surfer’s Paradise, Top Secret, and Winning Move.

There are four other P400,000 races on Sunday, sponsored by Philracom, PCSO, MJC, and Midas Hotel and Casino; and five P500,000 races sponsored by Resorts World Manila, Solaire Resort and Casino (two), City of Dreams Manila, and San Miguel Corporation.

Saturday, Aug. 29, will feature an additional P1 million in added prizes, with five P200,000 races backed by Stradcom (two), EEG Development Corp., DLTB Transport, and SMART Corp.-Pasay City Mayor Antonio Calixto.

Other sponsors are Premium Leisure and Amusement, Red Bull, and Fundador. The latter two will be giving gift packs to winning grooms and other participants.

The amount of total prizes this year is at P8.5 million for 18 races out of 25 for the weekend, the highest total prize money put up for this event thus far.

Also on Sunday is the Philracom 1st leg Juvenile Fillies and Colts stakes, with the following nominated entries: Alki, Dream Weaver, Homonhon Island, Killer Hook, Mount Iglit, Port Angeles, Pronto, Show the Whip, Sippin Away, Sky Glory, and Spectrum.

Hard-charging Messi nipped four others at the wire to emerge champion of the Philracom 5th leg Import-Local Challenge held last Aug. 23 at Metroturf Racecourse.

The 4YO stayer owned by Felipe O. Vergara hung back in fifth position for most of the 2,000-meter race, behind Silver Sword, Bentley, Strong Champion, and Macho Machine.

It wasn’t until the far turn that Messi started heating up to steam down the stretch and earn P300,000 for his owner. Silver Sword took second place, followed by Strong Champion and Bentley in that order.

The 4YO colt is by Ready’s Image (USA) out of Salon Lumiere (Aus).
